Abe Vigoda was born in Brooklyn in a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia. He made his acting debut at age 17 in a Shakespeare play on Broadway, but became known by his first major film role in mob epic “The Godfather” in 1972. In it, he played the role of Salvatore – Sal – Tessio.
Tessio, together with Peter Clemenza (Richard Castellano part of) one of the capos – an underboss – in the Mafia family of great boss Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando role). When finally his youngest son Michael Corleone (role of Al Pacino) takes over the leadership of the organization, Tessio decides to betray Michael.
In the second film of “The Godfather” trilogy Vigoda still plays a minor role in a flashback scene. Later, he played roles in such films as “Newman’s law,” “Cannonball Run II” and “Crime spree.” Then above all, he starred in television series such as “Barney Miller”, “Fish,” “The Love Boat,” “MacGyver” and “Law & amp; Order”
