 Fire gets people seniors complex

There ailed necessary to seniors apartment in Nijmegen, which recently fell four dead after a fire. That turned out tonight at a press conference of the fire Gelderland-Zuid and the city.

The smoke doors were not all valid. Therefore could spread a lot of smoke through the building. The victims and the injured all had smoke damage. The killed people all lived on the upper floors of the five-storey complex. The fire doors were sound.

The most elderly residents in the building wing could not go outside. The fire department has more than forty residents should get out of the building, some of whom with a platform. The Fire Academy has been commissioned by the municipality investigate whether the owner of the complex can be held responsible for the shortcomings in the property.

Fire began in cafeteria

The fire started on 20 February at the distribution of a cafeteria among seniors apartment. When the snack bar was ablaze, the fire hit on to a central ventilation duct that ended on the roof of the complex. Because this channel was covered with a kind of foam, formed a lot of thick, toxic smoke that spread to all floors. The fire department had five hours to be the fire master. The cafeteria, furthermore, did all the requirements.

The Prosecution is conducting an investigation into the fire. Until this is done, the renovation of the building can not start. The cafeteria is completely destroyed. May need to be demolished also the whole complex. The building has 71 apartments, where 94 people lived. It will take many months to go before they can take back home. (Reuters)
