When driving a Elfstedentocht in the winter of 2015/2016, all members of the Association Frisian Eleven Cities may appear at the start. The members voted today in a general meeting, flocking to the change of the start policy, as the club announced.
So far, only half of the more than 30,000 members could irons under bind to the Eleven Cities Cross to get. When safety on the ice played a role, but the reason was practical and logistical nature. So participants had previously subscribe to Leeuwarden Air Base, which shuttles and rode down. That will no longer be required by the construction of a new ice rink in the provincial capital, the Elfstedenhal.
The association said in November, when it was decided to submit the change in the start policy to members, looked to have similar skating tours in the country. There did in some cases tens of thousands of people, and the rides still went well. The knowledge about the capacity of the ice has improved in recent years, so the risks can be better estimated.
The board of the Frisian Eleven Cities already received requests for years to revise the policy starts. Lifting the participants limit means that there are several organizational changes need to be made. So there must be looked at staggered start and the route should be adjusted, in particular in the traditional bottleneck Sneek
The last Elfstedentocht has been some time ago held:. In 1997. Henk Angenent then came in Leeuwarden first across the finish line.
