Today in The Hague on Spuiplein hundreds of people come together to commemorate the nearly one hundred years ago the Armenian genocide began. There were, according to a spokesman for the organization some 1500 people in the square. Among those present were some MPs. Press service reported that ANP.
Among the speakers were the politicians Harry van Bommel (SP), Kees van der Staaij (SGP), Joel Voordewind (Christian Union) and Harm Beertema (PVV). The Armenian genocide began on April 24, exactly one hundred years ago in what is now Turkey. Between 800,000 and 1 million people here were killed. The European Parliament approved in 1987 the death of hundreds of thousands of Armenians as genocide. Parliament urges the Turkish government to do the same “as to pave the way for a real reconciliation between the Turkish and Armenian people.”
