Tuesday night a fire broke out in the tower of the Laurentiuskerk at the Herengracht. A part of the steeple collapsed. When the fire broke out, houses were around the church cleared. Most of the residents were able to during the night again to get home, but for the residents of five homes gold that is not. One family could Wednesday to return, but four other families should have to wait, because it is not yet clear whether the roof of the church is stable.
For the extinguishing of the fire was enlisted the help of the fire brigade Haaglanden. That features a faucet that can be used to high altitude to extinguish the fire. The church tower was 65 feet tall. About the cause of the fire is still not known. But it is clear that Tuesday, work was carried out in the tower. It is possible after a short circuit.
The church was already two years no longer in use as places of worship. A local entrepreneur wanted the church to make a hotel. He is excited by the fire. The municipality wants that quick work is made of the recovery. ,,The lawrence church is a defining landmark in the city of Weesp, where by residents a lot of value to being annexed,” said acting mayor Bas Jan van Bochove.
