A bus with invited guests, among whom were minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen of Infrastructure and Environment and mayor Annemarie Penn-te Strake of Maastricht, the A2-tunnel when first taken into use.
The King Willem-Alexandertunnel is the first double-layer tunnel of the Netherlands. In the two lower tubes is the through traffic between Eindhoven and Liege to drive.
The top two tubes are intended for local traffic. On top of the tunnel is a green strip laid out for walkers and cyclists, which 1800 trees will be planted.
The project has 850 million euro cost and is paid for by the Maastricht and Meerssen, the Empire and the province of Limburg. The official opening is in spring 2017.
