Most of the secondary schools in the Netherlands allows the use of smartphones in the classroom. This is evident from research by the NOS. The news studied 137 middle schools. At 85 percent smartphones are used in class.

That does not mean that students can check their phone constantly. On half of the schools smartphone is allowed into the classroom, but he may be used only with permission of the teacher.

Ten of the surveyed schools pupils have their smartphone contrast, at home or in their locker leave. 25 percent of schools does not limit.

Part of the curriculum

The students of the smartphones are frequently used to support the teaching materials. According to the NOS, almost all schools that allow cell phones in class, students find information on their phone.

More than half of the surveyed schools use educational apps and set an example test or a quiz on the mobile phones. One third of secondary schools who participated in the study communicate teachers even with students via the smartphone.

Problems smartphone use

The research shows that high schools also experienced problems because students can make use of their smartphones. More than half of the schools indicates that some students can concentrate less and worse to watch because they are distracted by the phone.

In addition, more than 50 percent called cyber bullying as a problem. This would in some cases have led to a climate where students are digitally extorted and nude photos are distributed.

Also, the negative impact could affect the dynamics between teacher and pupil, because conflicts are filmed and then appear online or shared with other students.
