Joris Mathijsen as technical manager back at Willem II – BN DeStem

Joris Mathijsen, one of the major players in the history of Willem II Tilburg is back at the club. He’s the next three years technical manager. The 36-year-old Goirle to begin on 1 July its activities.

Mathijsen is a product of the youth academy of William II. While there every season doubts about his abilities, he took on the first team mentality. This mentality led him away. From 1998 to 2004 he played six seasons in the first team of Willem II. The Tilburg club jumped after sloppy with his expiring contract. Mathijsen was one of six players who could leave on a free transfer. At AZ he was reunited with Martin van Geel and coach Co Adriaanse.

Hamburger SV was the next step. Then Mathijsen played for Malaga, along with Ruud van Nistelrooy. In 2012 he returned to the Netherlands. He played three seasons for Feyenoord. There was even talk of him as a player would return at Willem II. However, a year ago Mathijsen put an end to his career. During his career Mathijsen was 84 times for the Dutch national team, with which he played the World Cup final in 2010 against Spain.

Willem II welcome the return of Mathijsen in an important technical role. ,, He has for many years played with Willem II and is a person who knows the region well and clubs. The conversations we had were very nice, “says director Berry van Gool. Mathijsen in turn is happy with his return to the old nest. He sees the role of technical manager as a huge challenge.

Mathijsen follows in the footsteps of his uncle Gerard Wielaert. That was also a time technical manager of William II and held that post later also at Roda JC.
