The United States Netherlands approached with the request to carry out border checks at Schiphol. It is called “preclearance” facilities. Writes minister van der Steur of Security and Justice to parliament.
The idea is that travelers to or through the US the country of departure and are checked on arrival in the US no longer have to go through border controls. That would help in the waiting times at airports in the US limits. According to the minister, other European countries also approached with a request.
In the US, the immigration department will check flown by foreigners whereby the passport and visa are checked. Fingerprints are taken and also a picture, and taken some travelers for questioning.
Effects unknown
The US has the world all such foreign border checkpoints. At 15 airports, including in Canada, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Bermuda, Aruba and the Bahamas.
The ministry would now research into the implications of such checkpoints at Schiphol. So it is not yet known what to do with travelers who are refused, the exchange of personal data and whether enforcement staff to be armed.
