The 72-year-old Dutchman is the successor to the Italian Ottavio Cinquanta, which was the head of the ISU the past 22 years. Dijkema the last six years been vice president of the skating union.
dijkema is the third Dutch chairman of the ISU. Pim Mulier (1892-1895), the first ISU president, and Gerrit van Laer (1937-1945) were his predecessors.
Dijkema received in the second round of the conference in the Croatian Dubrovnik eleven votes more the Hungarian György Imre Sallak 63 against 52. the other two candidates, the Frenchman Didier Gailhaguet and Briton Christopher Buchanan, had retired after the first round

. “This is good news for the skating and the Netherlands. We have worked hard in recent months to the last moment and many countries talked to Jan Dijkema as the most suitable candidate to put forward for president of the ISU,” said Theo Fledderus, general manager of the Dutch Federation and one of the members of the Dutch delegation at the conference in Croatia.
“It’s great that Dijkema get the chance to realize the much needed renovations, jointly with federations and athletes. Together with the ISU, we can now build on the renewal of skating.”
three world Cups
the ISU members stopped earlier in the day fixed for three world championships per year in the long track speed skating.
the proposal of the technical committee for the world Single distance championships , the World Cup round and the World Cup sprint to rotate and hold a World Cup year was rejected by the ISU congress in Croatia, reports Schaatsen.nl.
one exception remains the year of the Olympics, no World Championship distances are organized.
it was also decided that the organization of the World Cup round is not going to change. The distances remain the 500, 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters for men and 500, 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters for women.
On the World Single Distance Championships program will also include the team sprint from 2019 .
