The canvas comes from the Water Board Hollands Noorderkwartier that some 65 years ago converted bought for 140 euros. The work, David with the Head of Goliath, dates from 1657 and is probably worth a few million.
The painting has hung for decades unnoticed in an office of the water in Hoorn. An appraiser, who came for the insurance of the collection, said that it sometimes here could go a precious and special painting. British art historian Nicholas Turner recently wrote with certainty to Guercino.
Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Il Guercino (the cross-eyed), lived from 1591 to 1666. “He was one of the most celebrated painters of his time, with dozens of orders for altarpieces, including the Saint Peter’s Basilica in Rome ” is a statement of the museum.
