Number of godwits in the Netherlands again hard fallen – NU.nl

The national census provided this year 4,000 young boy. That is well less than the 11,000 birds that are busy to the state to maintain, set Vogelbescherming Netherlands. Also other birds are large in numbers have decreased.

It goes according to the Society for years, bad with the black-tailed godwit in the Netherlands. The organisation blames this, as in other years, a “dramatic” expired breeding season.

The problems for the black-tailed godwit occur by early mowing of grasslands. Also, the areas to dry and they contain too little flowers. Godwits may, therefore, fewer insects for their food. On the bare plains of his chicks are also easy prey for predators.

Setback

The black-tailed godwit, last year chosen as the National Bird of the Netherlands, according to the Society this year an additional setback to the process. At the end of may caused severe thunderstorms with hail sure that growing chicks do not always survive. In particular, in the North of the Netherlands where godwits later hatching, the young chicks have been hit hard.

The Society had at the beginning of this month even filed a complaint against the Dutch government to the meadow. Reason is the plan of state secretary Martijn van Dam (Economic Affairs) to no money available for bird management.

The protection of Birds fears that, in time, yet only 1,500-tailed godwits remain.
