International trade must take into account the welfare of animals. If European rules for proper treatment of animals are at stake, that should be a reason for import restrictions or other measures.
That’s Sharon Dijksma Secretary (Economic Affairs) said Saturday during a meeting of the Animal in Doorn. The European Union should advocate at the World Trade Organization that animal welfare is a condition for trade.
Such trading conditions also exist for products manufactured with child labor and for sustainable timber. Imports may be limited or labels may be mentioned that the product does not comply with Dutch or European rules.
