The-Life Clinic at The Hague is reprimanded for the euthanasia of a woman with severe tinnitus (ringing). According to the regional euthanasia review committees (RTE), the patient should be examined psychiatric (pdf).
In a statement on its website saying the clinic to wonder about this judgment.
“The psychiatrist of-Life Clinic had ruled that a psychiatric condition gave rise to the request for euthanasia.”
had According to the clinic the patient numerous therapies and treatment options tried, but there were no meaningful treatment options possible. “Her suffering was unbearable and hopeless.” The patient had not only suffer from tinnitus, but also suffered hypersensitivity to environmental sounds (hyperacusis).
The review committee finds that tinnitus with hyperacusis can be severe enough to for euthanasia to be considered, but it was because of “psychological vulnerability” of the patient requires caution. The-Life Clinic believes that RTE’s should be more cautious in asking for psychiatric research.
“They often ask for additional psychiatric evaluation, even when it comes to a clear physical diagnosis.”
The 47-year-old Gaby Olthuis is deceased last year. In the NCRV program Always What Monitor , last night on TV, she described her symptoms: the ringing sounded like a passing train screeches. She also suffered from a condition where every sound hurts.
The Times says her friend in a reconstruction that the judgment of the RC hurts.
“It feels unfair. And careless. Her suffering was so bright. I have seen up close how Gaby hoped, how she wanted to heal and how she could not. There was nothing vague or psychiatric. She could very well articulate what they wanted. I remain grateful that it happened that way. “
Her mother says happy in the morning newspaper dar her daughter from her suffering is redeemed.
“As much as I miss her, this could not go on. She saved it no longer her willpower “
