Gasteren (1922) was active on many fronts. So he gave books and founded several production business. He also worked on art and technology.
His fascination for water led to the permanent artworks The roots of the city in the Nieuwmarkt metro station in Amsterdam. He was also involved in the information center on the Neeltje Jans.
Spectrum Films he produced his first film in 1952, Brown Gold , on cocoa and chocolate. One of his latest films, from 2005/2006, is about the execution of civilians from Roermond in 1944.
He turned since the early fifties over seventy films and television reports. He also gave many lectures and he was a visiting professor in the United States. He received many awards, including two Golden Calves and work-Calf, and the Silver Carnation Prince Bernhard Culture
