Despite turmoil and a number of large fires in various parts of the country did the New Year this year, relatively quiet. There were fewer serious crimes, fewer arrests and fewer fireworks complaints compared to last year. It involves first provisional police figures.

“The police see a shift in the number of serious offenses for lighter offenses, which often can be dealt with by the police.” That said Minister Ivo Opstelten (Security and Justice) tonight at a press conference on the celebration of old and new. The police made 576 arrests that were there last year on January 1, 824.

“There were fewer arrests and there was a slight decline in violence against officers and social workers’, says Opstelten. “Tens of thousands of people have visited the fireworks shows organized by municipalities. There it was busy but fun.

According Opstelten have fireworks free zones, shorter parting and sales times and fireworks shows contributed to the positive trend. He wants these instruments in the coming years’ further expansion. “But I’m not satisfied, it should be better.”

Substantial reduction

In 2013, 8,413 incidents were reported, versus 8,236 so far during this new year. The Public Prosecutor has made so far 377 cases. On 1 January last year that figure at 615. Opstelten speaks of a ‘substantial reduction’. There are more cases handled by the police. Eight cases were selected for high speed law.

The fire did less to drive than last year. She had a total of 4,253 times pluck. This is down by a quarter compared to the turn of the year last year. The night was called “flawed” by a number of large fires, said the minister. He referred inter alia to Uden where two primary schools went up in flames and the fire in the center of Alkmaar.

The mayor Alkmaar then called for a fireworks ban on individuals. Opstelten feels nothing for it. “We must not think of any year other measures.”

Less fireworks complaints

The hotline vuurwerkoverlast.nl has so to 68,000 complaints received. Last year it was on January 1, more than 80,000. This said the founder of the FIU, the Rotterdam GroenLinks councilor Arno Bonte, today.

On New Year’s Eve complained about 5,000 people about damage by fireworks, dangerous situations on the street and smog by fireworks, where mostly people with lung problems suffered from. According Bonte have fireworks free zones worked well. There were only 23 reports of people because in a free zone fireworks fireworks were chipped.

The hotline, which opened on December 24, to January 3, remains open to the public. Then the complaints are compiled into a report that is presented to 25 mayors and the House
