Barge capsizes on Westerschelde; 35 year old man missing from Moerdijk – BN DeStem

BRESKENS – The 35-year-old Rick Broekmeulen from Moerdijk is still missing after it capsized last night with a barge on the Westerschelde. It looks as though the ship is lifted only tonight. Father Henk Broekmeulen (66) from Zevenbergen was rescued Friday morning.

The ship capsized around midnight. A dredger was the barge loading and thereby went wrong. On board the barge were three people: father and son and a third crew member. Henk father and son Rick Broekmeulen were sleeping; the crew, a 17-year-old boy from Klundert, stood on deck.

Crew

The boy from Klundert hit the water. He could be around 0:45 pm aboard the dredger and later to Breskens where an ambulance was waiting. A large part of the night is searched for the, then, two missing.

saved Father

Around 7.30 am the father was rescued from the ship. He was hypothermic but approachable to the hospital. Probably has a bubble in the ship saved his life.

Sandbar

She lies down on a sandbank. Multraship Friday has searched the living area and the bedroom, but had to discontinue the search around 9:30 because the rescuers could not safely enter the other areas. The wheelhouse has been dented by the capsizing and therefore not (yet) available.

This morning is still sought by the Coast Guard SAR helicopter of North Sea helicopters Flanders, but also without success. The helicopter is now back to his base. On the quest did several lifeboats KNRM, police, navy (the Belgian) and barges along.

The water temperature is about 4 degrees Celsius.
