‘Less legal firearms sharpest drop in the past seven years “- nrc.nl

The number of legal firearms dropped last year from 209 922 to 205 347, Nu.nl on the basis of figures obtained the news via the Freedom of Information Act. It is the strongest decline in the past seven years.

On the islands in Zeeland and in the east of the country (where sport hunting is greatest) are found most legal weapons. Police gives a number of reasons for the decline. So should permit holders who emigrate to surrender their weapons, as well as people who have practiced and thereby stopped hunting sport.

Facts and figures

  • In 2014, 1 in 82 people in possession of a firearm. In 2007, 1 in 79.6 people.
  • Most of the weapons are in circulation on the islands of Ameland (7.27 weapons per 100 inhabitants) and Schiermonnikoog (5.41). In the municipality of Tubbergen in Overijssel, the rate is 5.04.
  • The lowest relative number has Utrecht, with 031 firearms per 100 inhabitants. Followed Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Delft (0.33).
