UMC Utrecht reverse may be sperm in the ivf-laboratory – NOS

In the UMC Utrecht are errors made in the ivf laboratory. As a result in the fertilization of oocytes of 26 pairs with the ICSI method may be the wrong sperm is used. The chance, therefore, that the ova are fertilized with the sperm of the wrong man.

It happened between april 2015 and november this year. According to the UMC Utrecht is a small chance that the egg cells are fertilized by the wrong seed, but it is not excluded.

half of the women has since given birth or is pregnant. Of the other 13 couples have embryos frozen, in which the likelihood exists that the ova are fertilized with the sperm of the intended father.

Reduced

The hospital has launched an investigation, the involved couples will be informed and the matter reported to the inspection, the health care inspectorate. The pairs get as soon as possible a personal conversation with the treating physician.

it is done everything possible to meet them. For example, the pairs, for example a DNA test. The couples whose embryos are still frozen, can decide to not let them back in.

In ICSI, a spermatozoon directly into the oocyte injected. In the ova of the corresponding ICSI treatments is not according to the standard procedure acted.

Remaining seed

“There is a tool that is not for that purpose was intended. It is a human error,” explains the hospital. “There is seed left over from a previous treatment, and that may have ended up in the egg during the next treatment.”

When the error was discovered, the procedure is immediately discontinued and the UMC started a study of the cause of the anomalous behaviour. Meanwhile, the hospital took measures to prevent it from happening again.
