Social Affairs Inspectorate in the past year audited 168 employers who employ foreign students. It involved infringements including not having a work permit, underpayment and forgery. The Inspectorate has 75 fines for a total of over € 900,000, -.

A foreign student who has a residence permit for study may work in the Netherlands up to ten hours per week or 40 hours per week in the June, July and August. This refers to students who come from a country outside the EEA and Switzerland, or from Bulgaria or Romania (for these two countries, this applied until 1 January 2014). The employer must then have a work permit.

The Inspectorate has focused inspected at certain businesses, particularly for companies in the hospitality, retail and staffing industry. It makes the Inspectorate include use of data from the IND and CWI. Monitoring focuses on violations of the Aliens Employment Act (Wav) and the Minimum Wage and Minimum Holiday Allowance (WML).
