Dutch seat at UN Security Council not sure after three rounds of voting – NU.nl

At the headquarters in New York spend all 193 Member States of their vote. There are two free to allocate places for Western Europe. Sweden got a place with 134 votes in the first round. 125 Member States voted for the Netherlands and 113 in Italy.

As the Netherlands and Italy had no two-thirds majority, was voted a second time. The second and third round yielded no two-thirds majority.

Netherlands received in the third round 96 votes, while Italy have received 94. The meeting is for lunch suspended until 21 hours Dutch time.

Ethiopia, Kazakhstan and Bolivia have received enough votes in the ballots for their own temporary spot on the board.



Security

the Security Council is seen as the supreme organ which is gathered about international conflicts and crises. With a temporary seat Netherlands could take part in the meetings.

Since the Second World War has been Netherlands five times member of the Security Council, most recently in 1999 and 2000. Taking the winners of this year from 1 January 2017 in their place.

Campaign

the Netherlands has for years lobbied for a spot on the board. The government argued in recent days, a final offensive, Minister Bert Koenders (Foreign Affairs) and Minister Lilianne Ploumen (Foreign Trade and Development) traveled to New York.

Last September said King Willem-Alexander of the General Assembly UN increasing. It was the first time a Dutch head of state did. The Netherlands speech underlined his candidacy for a temporary seat on the Security Council.



Opportunities

Italy, according to the experts, the best chance to win a seat. The location makes the country important in the refugee crisis. Composition

The Security Council has five permanent members. China, France, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The council has ten non-permanent members. Of the non-permanent members should have three from Africa, two from Asia and two from Latin America.

One country must be Eastern European, while the rest group of Western Europe, Canada and Oceania also further supplies two members, of whom one is certainly in Western Europe. African or Asian countries, there is always a Muslim.



Temporary ledem

Every year the General Assembly chooses five new members, who are in the Security Council two years session. The Presidency of the Council rotates monthly, and distributed in alphabetical order.

Germany, Brazil, India and Japan believe it is time for new permanent members and see themselves sit permanently on the Security Council.
