Netherlands fights for place in UN Security Council – NU.nl

At the headquarters in New York spend all 193 Member States of their vote. Netherlands competes in a third round of voting in Italy for the second vacant seat for Western European countries.

Sweden Friday received 134 votes. 125 Member States voted for the Netherlands and 113 for Italy. Because the Netherlands and Italy had no two-thirds majority, was voted a second time.

In the second round was Netherlands 99 and Italy 92 votes. Because there was no majority has decided on a third ballot.



Security

The Security Council is seen as the supreme organ which is gathered about international conflicts and crises. With a temporary seat would Netherlands in those meetings it can participate.

Since World War II Netherlands five times been a member of the Security Council, most recently in 1999 and 2000. Taking the winners of this year from January 1, 2017 in their place.

Campaign

the Netherlands has for years lobbied for a spot on the board. The government argued in recent days, a final offensive, Minister Bert Koenders (Foreign Affairs) and Minister Lilianne Ploumen (Foreign Trade and Development) traveled to New York.

Opportunities

Composition

The Security Council has five permanent members. China, France, Russia, the United States and the United Kingdom. The council has ten non-permanent members. Of the non-permanent members should be three from Africa, two from Asia and two from Latin America.

One country must be African, while the rest group of Western Europe, Canada and Oceania also agree two members provide, of which at least one is Western European. African and Asian countries, there is always a Muslim.

Every year the General Assembly chooses five new members, who are in the Security Council two years session. The Presidency of the Council rotates monthly, and distributed in alphabetical order.

Germany, Brazil, India and Japan believe it is time for new permanent members and see themselves sit permanently on the Security Council.
