Precautions mussels and oysters Oosterschelde – Focus on News

mussels and oysters need to be tested from the nearby dilutive areas before they are placed on the market. This is the Dutch Food Safety Authority (NVWA) decided in consultation with the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS).

The reason for the decision is to prevent the toxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) in mussels and oysters. This is a precautionary measure in view of the public health. The measures will ensure that no mussels and oysters are brought in for humans harmful levels TTX marketed. Private anglers and swimmers are advised to attend to pick any mussels or oysters from these two areas.

With regular measurements of the quality of the cultivation of mussels and oysters NVWA has the second place in the Eastern concentrations of TTX found that may be harmful when consumed. TTX is a toxic substance whose origin is not clear

The NVWA bases this on the advice of the scientists from the Office for Risk Assessment & amp.; Research programming (BuRO) has done a risk assessment for TTX. TTX is a highly toxic substance that can affect the nervous system.
