Jubilee Medal for COC Netherlands Amsterdam – Focus on News

COC Netherlands has received the Jubilee Medal of the city of Amsterdam, for his unwavering commitment to equality rights and acceptance of sexual diversity. Councillor Simone Kukenheim (diversity), the medal presented to COC president Tanja Ineke. That happened during the celebration of the 70th anniversary and the opening of the COC Shakespeare Club in the Amsterdam Museum. The COC is the largest and oldest LHBTI-interest group in the world and receive the medal on the first day of Europride

Alderman Kukenheim:. “The COC has a glorious struggle for emancipation managed to unleash equal rights and acceptance of sexual diversity. Everyone should be able to be themselves and love who they want. As capital we take very seriously this right. Along with the COC, we are committed to make this happen in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the rest of the world. There is still much to do; we are not there yet. Therefore, the work of the COC is still very topical and important. “

COC Netherlands is celebrating 70 years. The organization was founded in Amsterdam in 1946 under the name Shakespeare Club and is probably the oldest existing LHBTI-interest group in the world. In 1949, the Shakespeare Club was renamed the Cultural and Leisure Centre, or the COC.

COC Netherlands has an exceptional track record when it comes to commitment to the LHBTI community. The organization has made a major contribution to open up marriage to same-sex partners and the abolition of compulsory sex registration in the municipality of Amsterdam. The organization has conducted successful campaign to codify information about LHBTI in the curriculum of schools.

Despite these achievements it remains today still of great importance to the social acceptance of lesbians, gay continue to promote men, bisexuals, transgender and intersex. COC contributes as a partner of the Dutch government at both national and international level to this.
