TU Delft develops unique personal valairbag for the elderly – Focus on News

If elderly people fall down, often has serious consequences. Regular death even older due to a fall. The future aging will increase this number.

The development of the airbag Heike is working with her colleagues from the Department BioMechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Industrial Design and the Dutch start-up CLOUD BV.

Val predict

the latest statistics from Safety EN (2014) show that 88,000 elderly people were treated in the emergency room after a fall. 40,000 people had to be hospitalized and nearly 3,000 elderly deceased as a result of a fall.

The valairbag protects elderly against personal injury in the event of instability. Heike Vallery investigates the valalgoritme that instability in older people must predict. This ensures that the air bag deployment in a timely manner. Within a year the new valalgoritme will be built in the first series of valairbags that will produce CLOUD.

Quality

“We are pleased that we can contribute to the solution to this social problem. And the user experience is not itself affected. The air bag is comfortable, easy to use and wear under most clothes. The pillows can unfold on three sides (left, right and rear) allowing the user to run the least risk of injury to the hip, ‘says Filippo Hell Hubar of CLOUD BV and alumnus of Aerospace Engineering at TU Delft.

Co

This week signed Theun Baller, dean of the faculty 3mE a cooperation contract with CLOUD BV. The agreement is a continuation of many years of fruitful cooperation between CLOUD BV and the Delft University of Technology which TU Delft contributes to solving societal problems.
