The Public Prosecutor (OM) demanded six years at Ernst Jansen Steur. But the court has now acquitted the former neurologist of all medical crimes. How about that?

Elsevier.nl put three questions and answers in a row on the biggest medical criminal case in Dutch history.

1. What Jansen has already on his slate?

As a doctor from the Medical Spectrum Twente would Jansen Steur have deliberately false diagnoses between 1997 and 2003. He told several patients that they had very serious diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease or muscle disease ALS. He also wrote the wrong medication for

This had far-reaching consequences for his patients:. Some were a serious physical injury or psychological complaints. One patient committed suicide, ‘panicked after hearing the diagnosis of a fatal illness. Therefore Jansen Steur could be held accountable.

In a criminal case the horror doctor was sentenced last year to three years imprisonment. Justice had demanded six years in prison. Both the former neurologist if the prosecution appealed against the ruling.

2. Why now anyway acquittal?

The judge Jansen Steur has now acquitted on appeal of all medical crimes. It was not proven that the physician intentionally misdiagnosis of serious diseases identified during its patients. Prove that he did that deliberately, according to the court thin or even non-existent.

But the horror doctor given a suspended prison sentence of only six months for theft, embezzlement and forgery. That punishment he receives for the preparation of false authorization forms and recipes and steal 88,000 euros from the coffers of foundation Lewy Body Project, which deals with neurological examination. The former neurologist wrote himself on stolen prescription drugs for blocks colleagues. Jansen Steur was addicted to include Dormicum, Nitrazepam and viagra.

3. Taking prosecutors unsatisfied with that judgment?

Probably not. The prosecution had appealed again demanded six years in prison and considering going to the Supreme Court. Injury expert Yme Drost, who assisted several victims of the doctor, is disappointed and even angry. According to Drost, the OM been idle for years after the declaration in 2007. “The hospital Jansen has tried to stop this thing at the time in the carpet. That behavior is rewarded. “

Jansen Steur itself is relieved at the verdict. He has always admitted that he made mistakes, but denied that he did so intentionally. The former neurologist suffered a “pathological” form of overconfidence, he said earlier in front of the court. He called himself without reason “Professor” and he put his mother’s name (sturgeon) behind his surname because it sounded this genteel
