BNN clones dog for tv-program – NOS

For the first time a Dutch pet cloned. That has happened in South Korea, for a new program of BNN.

In the Netherlands it is forbidden to animals to clone, but the import of a cloned animal may have. Animal welfare organisations and political parties react indignantly.

Joep

The dog who is cloned is the 12-year-old bulldog Joep from Rotterdam. Joep is now dead, but the owners are very happy with the successful clone, Pipo. “It’s not just the external features which are almost identical”, they tell The Telegraph. “We are daily amazed at the conduct and character, that on so many points corresponds with our old dog. That is not to believe.”

The owners of Joep had responded to a call from BNN to people that their pet is genetically wanted to copy. They had a piece of fabric from their dog to the South Korean company Sooam Biotech to send. It took the broadcaster, according to the newspaper 50,000 euros to Joep to clone.

Opvanghond

The CDA, D66, PVV and the Party for the Animals against the clones on order. The PVV finds it contradictory that in the Netherlands no animals may be cloned, but genetically copied animals are allowed to be imported. The CDA is against because according to that party great risks to the clone to sit.

The Dutch Federation animal rescue Organizations are called in the paper, a bizarre development. “The animal shelters full with dogs who sometimes for years have to wait on a guy. We find it better to have a opvanghond a chance at a lovely life,” says a spokeswoman.

Farming

In the program Clone: Wish or Madness? travel Sophie Hilbrand and scientist Bas Haring over the world to get to know more about the phenomenon of cloning. In South Korea, they visit the first company that pets, clones, and in Texas they go to a livestock farm.

The first episode of Clone: Wish or Madness? is next Friday broadcast, at 21.10 hours.
