Group of 220 physicians speaks out against euthanasia in old people with dementia – NU.nl

A group of 220 doctors has Friday through an advertisement in the Dutch newspaper NRC Next pronounced against euthanasia in old people with dementia.

The doctors explain that they cannot euthanasia is going to provide “patients with advanced dementia on the basis of a wilsverklaring”.

As someone previously drawn-up wilsverklaring that he is dead does not want to confirm, the doctors will no lethal injection to administer, they write. “Our moral repugnance to the life of a defenseless human being to end is too high,” reads the statement.

With the ad want to the doctors a new discussion about levensbeëindiging in demented elderly. In december 2015, came the ministry of Health with the Guide in writing euthanasieverzoek, that allows people with advanced dementia voluntarily from the life steps, if there is a written wilsverklaring on the table (drawn up when the patient still wilsbekwaam was), and there is a case of unbearable and hopeless suffering.
