Makers documentary “Guilty” Journalist of the Year 2016 – NOS

Makers Sarah Sylbing and Esther Gould are together named Journalist of the Year 2016. The duo was awarded the prize for their documentary series Guilty (HUMAN), people with debts in the Vogelbuurt in Amsterdam-Noord.

The prize is awarded annually by journalistenvakblad Villamedia, and is intended for one or more people who have an exceptional journalistic achievement.

According to the jury of the prize are Sylbing and Gould masters in the art of storytelling. “Although that Guilty a documentary is, it sometimes seems more of a drama series where you’re curious as to each following episode,” says Villamedia. “The perverse way in which we in the Netherlands deal with people in debt is the subject of wide public and political debate has become.”

The winners were published by Nieuwsuur-journalist Bas Haan. He was in 2015 named Journalist of the Year. Haan received the award for his disclosures about the Teevendeal. As a result, trading minister Opstelten, secretary of state Teeven and speaker of Of Miltenburg.

This year there were for the first time, the nominees for the prize. That were except the winners Zembla-journalists, Ton van der Ham and Norbert Reintjens and Volkskrant-correspondent Ana van Es.
