In several European countries yesterday made a concerted action against illegal trade in horse meat. It is an “organized criminal network ‘rolled up, said Eurojust (the EU body for judicial cooperation). There were 26 arrests. In the Netherlands did a hundred employees of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) to the action along.
According to Eurojust in the operation in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg and Britain dozens conducted searches. A total of 37,000 euros cash confiscated. More than two hundred horses will be examined by veterinarians.
The French authorities estimate that between 2010 and 2013 alone, some 4,700 horses that were not suitable for consumption, have fallen into the human food chain. Fraudsters worked with forged documents. Eurojust has helped to set up a joint French-Belgian-British research team.
The Netherlands received a request for mutual assistance for the action. NVWA confirms the operation, but refer for details to the prosecution because it is a criminal investigation. The prosecution wants to Saturday only provide further information
