Suffering from the flu? The current epidemic is the longest in forty years – nrc.nl

The current flu epidemic is the longest in forty years. After two weeks, the end seems in sight, but the epidemic is not over, says the knowledge Nivel, doing research in health care. One bright spot: the epidemic is relatively mild.

Last week, there were 56 per 100,000 people to the doctor with flu-like symptoms. In 75 percent of the tested nose and throat samples found a flu virus. If less than 51 people with flu symptoms are at the doctor, the epidemic is over.

The epidemic may persist because different flu viruses out there that can cause the flu. Also, people have several times had the flu because they are infected with another virus.

Nivel did research at forty GP practices with 57 GPs, who reported weekly. The knowledge keeps since 1970 in the number of people with flu symptoms visit their doctor
