From today to open the turnstiles of Rotterdam Central station just yet with a smartcard for public transport. For customers without smart card keep the gates closed and platforms and shopping and restaurant facilities at the station no longer accessible.

Rotterdam Centraal is the first major station in the Netherlands where close loopholes for non-travelers. Initially this would happen before mid-year, but following recent violent incidents against staff of the Dutch Railways (NS) the date has been brought forward. The measure is intended to prevent the black riding in the train as much as possible. Often the black drivers who threaten railway employees and abuse.

In the course of the year will follow more drives the gates close. Eventually, 82 stations will be only visible for rail passengers. The Netherlands has over four hundred stations.
