Wits had been ill for some time.
For six years was Wits alderman for the CPN in Groningen. He held this position between 1976 and 1982, in the infamous period of leftist coalitions in the city.
In addition to his career as an alderman was Wits Groningen include known as one of the founders of the GSB, the Groninger Student Union. He also fought for the precursor of the North Dutch Theatre, the Provision.
In the years after his alderman he continued to work for the church.
Wits has become 67 years.
