Interior

Tonight is the first televised debate before the elections for provincial councils. Eight politicians from the Senate participate. What will be discussed? And can it be interesting?

Prime Minister Rutte would personally in the election campaign for dumping the Provincial Council, he said earlier this year in an interview with TVNZ (€). “These are national elections, which also directly affect the government,” said Rutte, who announced himself to participate in election debates.

What is it about?

Tonight is the first televised debate before the elections of March 18th. Not with the prime minister, but with eight politicians who next month can also be tuned: the top candidates for the Senate. They are elected indirectly, on May 26 set the Provincial Senate together. Rutte’s second cabinet has just now a majority of the ‘constructive three “: D66, Christian Union and SGP? Cabinet will propose later still can count on support in the Senate? Without the consent of the Senate, the government can hardly new policy, as experienced minister Edith Schippers (Make VVD) in December yet (€).

Nieuwsuur the debate tonight organized in the Senate itself, where the senators normally also vying – all eight of them are already in the Senate. But where they do especially common on the (in) validity of legislation, it goes tonight at four ‘big’ political issues: terrorism, care, windmills and employment. How the party leaders of the VVD, PvdA, CDA, PVV, SP, D66, Green and Christian Union think about it, will not differ materially from the opinions of their colleagues in the House.

Is it interesting?

Despite the opinions of senators and MPs probably not substantially different, this debate is an important indicator for the remainder of the campaign. And provides insight into the relationships in the Senate in the next four years.

Beginning D66 candidate Thom de Graaf in this debate as furiously with the Labour Party as a political leader Alexander Pechtold? Will Loek Hermans on behalf of the VVD pressing the constructive opposition to the chest as Rutte does? Has Marleen Barth of the Labour Party is just as difficult as Diederik Samson? Will Marjolein Faber behalf of the PVV particularly insist on Islam? That will be clear tonight.

Who are the participants?

Loek Hermans is one of the most famous members of the Senate. In his impressive political and administrative career, he was at the height Minister of Education in Purple II and led to controversy surrounding the bankruptcy of home care juggernaut Meavita. He is still a decisive factor in his own party and hopes this week to come up with a plan for a state commission to investigate the existence of the Senate

Marleen Barth is the second time the leader of the Labour Party for the Senate . Before that she was a journalist, parliamentarian and lobbyist. She fell in the Senate for the last four years, especially when things went wrong in her group. As with choosing a new Chamber president and the ‘care crisis’ for December. Yet she was the only candidate of the party for the party leadership. And she gets the next few years a fraction among themselves which unlike four years ago, is not equipped to perform hard opposition

Elco Brinkman was in a distant past minister. Then he was especially ‘mister building lobbies. In the formation of the Cabinet Rutte II counted on its reasonableness. But his CDA did back then do not cooperate directly with the planning minister Stef Blok (Housing, VVD) and led thus the agreements the government signed with D66, Christian Union and SGP.

Marjolein Faber -From the Klashorst was the departure of chairman Marcel de Graaff to the European Parliament, the leader of the Freedom Party in the Senate and should remain that of Wilders. Faber became famous because in the Provincial Council of Gelderland examined declarations of deputy Co. Verdaas (PvdA). That cost him his job as Secretary of State. Also in Gelderland Faber also re party leader and therefore it can be directly selected.

Tiny Kox is one of the longest-serving senators and again leads the SP. He is already the fourth time leader for the party which he joined in 1975. Like his fellow party members in the House he strongly opposes the current government.

Thom de Graaf was leader of D66 when Roger van Boxtel it after only one term weather seen held in the Senate. The former minister is also president of the Dutch universities. Last week he kandi teed also for the commission of Hermans to abolish the Senate or not.

Tineke Strik was earlier this month by the Green elected as leader of the Senate. Against the wishes of the candidates committee, who prefer her fellow senator Ruard Ganzevoort wanted as party chairman. Bow teaches immigration law at Nijmegen

Roel Kuiper especially enjoy in the Senate itself much fame and respect. The current leader of the Christian Union led the parliamentary inquiry into privatization – the only such study of the Senate. If gedoger of the current government, he had not always easy to agree with bills that are sensitive for the Christian Union
