Teachers UvA plans for tomorrow a playful demonstration – nrc.nl

A group of teachers and students of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) demonstrates again tomorrow for more democracy at the University of Amsterdam. Participants call all got to come in neat clothes. Professors will probably gown, writes news agency ANP. The rally does not take place at the Maagdenhuis, but the so-called REC building (Roeterseiland Campus).

“We do this to show that the people who change like in college really is not all ‘dirty squatters ‘, as social media has been suggested, “said Dan Hassler of the teachers action group Rethink UvA. The organization wants to show a different side of academic protest than what the last few days has been in the news.




Festival insecure

At the evacuation of the Maagdenhuis, the administration building of the University of Amsterdam, decided the triangle of municipality, the police and the prosecution yesterday to deploy the Mobile Unit. Ten people were arrested, of whom six were trapped today.

At the time the police arrived was in and for building the ‘Festival of Science’ busy, an event that was previously banned by the court because of security risks. The festival was with the express request of the UvA to quickly evacuate the Maagdenhuis the main reason for the triangle to intervene.



Tons of cost

The occupants of the Maagdenhuis Friday were told they had to leave the premises occupied for six weeks. Earlier in the day, the court had the UvA, the owner of the building, permission to evacuate the building. A bailiff then proposed a deadline of midnight, but the protesting students and teachers were to pass him by. The occupiers have ensured according to the university for 500,000 euros in costs.

The demonstration ReThink UvA begins tomorrow at 15.00. Teacher Hassler expected according to Reuters lot of interest from both teachers and students
