FNV is not happy with the increasing number of voluntary drivers in public transport. It leads to loss of paid jobs, says the union, which speaks of “job displacement”.
More than ten percent of drivers are volunteers and that number is expected to grow over the next few years only, the Volkskrant writes this morning. They are mainly retirees who volunteer coaches crawling around behind the wheel. This happens especially in rural areas, where unprofitable intercity then disappear. Netherlands now has about 150 local bus associations with an average of 25 volunteer bus drivers. With vans for up to eight people, they kept the lines of counties and public transport yielded too many losses. FNV said last month a hotline to deal with “the increasing displacement of paid jobs in the battle the city, regional and taxi. The union is calling on people to examples of job displacement to report there. (AP)
