Artis works with the foundation Ravon (Reptile Amphibian and Fish Research Netherlands), which began a few years ago with a plan to save the path. The goal is that there are strong populations in twenty years, which can reproduce on their own and survive. Artis Ravon have in recent years more than 80,000 garlic toads released into their natural habitat in North Brabant, Gelderland, Overijssel and Drenthe.

The path, which reaches a length of 4.5 to 6.5 centimeters, owes its name to the garlicky-smelling secretion that is released through the skin if there is danger. Since 1950, the number of habitats for the spadefoot decreased by 74 percent.
