The VVD wants the maximum prison term is increased from thirty to forty years, judges were not allowed to impose more life-like. MP Foort of East writes today in an opinion piece in True .

The party wants lifelong remains real life. Judges will severely punish an offender now have the choice between prison thirty years or life imprisonment. Some judges have preferred the first option, because the second perpetrators offers few prospects. People who have been given life, may still submit a pardon, but this is rarely granted.

East Thirty years cell no substitute for life. Should it be threatened with the VVD wants to increase the maximum penalty for manslaughter and murder, respectively fifteen to thirty, and thirty to forty years. “Society should be protected against serious criminals who have not the slightest respect for another,” Van Oosten writes in True .

The coalition partner VVD and PvdA are far apart on this issue. Labour MP Jeroen Recourt said early this year that should be looked at each sentenced to life imprisonment after 25 years of his sentence still makes sense. He called it human to offer offenders prospect of release.

The Board of Criminal Justice and Protection of Juveniles (RSJ) ruled last month that someone who is serving a life sentence nevertheless entitled to rehabilitation. The reason for the ruling was the case of a man who was convicted in 1989 and whose five pardons and a request for leave were rejected.

Former Secretary Fred Teeven (Security and Justice, VVD) said earlier finding that people who are sentenced to life are not eligible for reintegration activities.
