In addition to a Poet Laureate, Since Saturday, there is also a poet of the Netherlands. It is writer / poet Joke van Leeuwen, who was appointed by the initiator General Dutch Association (ANV). According to the ANV title is created “because poetry is one of the ways is to make the public aware of the relationship between the Netherlands and Flanders.”

The Poet of the Netherlands wants ANV help the commemoration of 200 years of United Kingdom of the Netherlands. From 1815 to 1830 were current Belgium and the Netherlands, one kingdom.

‘Joke van Leeuwen will write poems of their own choice for a wide audience on the relevant things in the Netherlands and Flanders’ said the ANV. The alliance promotes the connection between Dutch and Flemish.

The Poet Laureate is a purely Dutch affair in 2000, partly on the initiative of the NRC Handelsblad created. Anne Vegter bears the title now.
